Thurmont Police Deparment CAS Notification
The Thurmont Police Department would like to inform the residents and businesses of Thurmont that recent changes to Chapter 84 – Property Maintenance, makes it a violation of this ordinance to throw, blow, plow, or push snow and/or ice from your sidewalk, driveway or parking lot into the travelled portion of any public street. Violation of this ordinance is a municipal infraction with a fine of $50 per occurrence.
The Town of Thurmont asks that, if possible, you remove your vehicles and any basketball nets or other items within the streets, from the street to allow the snowplow operators to plow your street to the curbs. If the operators can not get through the street with their equipment, your street may not get opened in a timely manner.
If you should have any questions regarding this message you are encouraged to contact the Code Enforcement Officer, Kenny Oland, at koland@frederickcountymd.gov. This can be done by clicking on his email address above.
The Town of Thurmont , the Police Department, as well as the employees operating the snow removal equipment, would like to thank you, in advance, for your cooperation in this matter.
Lieutenant P. Allen Droneburg Deputy Chief of Police
An announcement made on February 19, 2010:
As the result of the back-to-back 20+ inch snow storms, the Mayor and Chief of Police suspended the 12 hour requirement for clearing sidewalks of snow/ice until further notice.
On Wednesday, February 17, 2010 the Mayor spoke with the Col. Eyler regarding this issue. It was agreed that we, the Town, would evaluate the situation throughout town, before enforcement would begin.
When enforcement does begin the following procedure will be followed:
1. A Notice of Violation will be sent to each property owner who has not cleared their sidewalk(s).
2. Each property owner will be given 7 days to clear their sidewalk(s).
3. If, after 7 days, the sidewalk(s) have not been cleared, a Notice of Non-Compliance will be sent to the property owner, along with a civil citation with a fine of $50.00. Each property owner will be given an additional 4 days to clear their sidewalk(s).
4. If, after the additional 4 days, the sidewalk(s) have not been cleared, the Town will clear the sidewalk(s) at the expense of the property owner. The property owner will be billed for all expensed related to the clearing of the sidewalk(s).
At this time we have NOT begun to enforce the clearing of sidewalk(s)! You will be notified when we begin. A press release will be prepared and distributed to the media when we begin to enforce this code.
Any questions related to snow covered sidewalks are to be directed to the Police Department at 301-271-0905.
